The story of My Next Step
A different kind of support

Most of life happens between appointments.

A workshop ends. A support worker goes home. But the questions, the possibilities, and life itself, keep going.

A fictional participant · An interactive story
Tuesday · 4:30 pm

The workshop ends.
Alex's life doesn't.

Alex has been out of work for a while. Today's session was useful, but there are things Alex still wants to think through.

A familiar gap in real-world support

“I didn't think of that question until I got home.”

Human support remains essential. It simply cannot be present at every moment.

The first design choice

There is no required path.

Alex doesn't have to enrol in an app journey or finish a profile before receiving support.

On a different day, a different door may be useful. Try selecting one. Every door leads to something practical, and every door leads back to real life.

Optional means optional. My Next Step is not a compulsory stage of Transform's service.

Wednesday · 7:18 pm

Sometimes the next step isn't a goal.

Alex opens Small Challenge. No quiz, lesson, streak or evidence to collect, just a little curiosity.

Interactive · Play with the cards
What feels interesting today?

Choose a spark, or let the cards surprise you.

No scores. No need to explain why.
You can take, swap, ignore, or leave. Nothing is automatically saved.

This activity can be complete without producing an achievement, skill or Story.

Then something ordinary happens.

Alex helps Mum understand an appointment letter. Later, Alex decides it might be worth remembering.

Participant-ownedNot saved

An ordinary Thursday

What happened

My mum had an appointment letter she wasn't sure about.

What I did

Sam will help Alex describe their own part, without making it bigger than it was.

What might matter

No skills need to be named. No outcome needs to be invented.

What the conversation can change

It isn't always about finding a skill.

Sometimes the useful change is how someone sees an experience they had already lived.

Before
“I just helped Mum with a letter.”
Something that might not feel worth mentioning.
A possible realisation
“I took a practical step to make an unclear appointment date easier to understand.”
Grounded in what happened, not in invented achievements.
Conversation is part of the support. The benefit is not limited to the Story that might get saved. Alex remains free to agree, disagree or simply move on.
Time changes the picture

A few minutes today.
Another moment, someday.

Alex's life continues. Some experiences feel worth preserving. Others don't. There is no target number.

September · One example
September

A confusing letter

Helped Mum clarify an appointment and prepare a question.

An ordinary moment
October

At a community event

Welcomed visitors and helped people find activities.

Another small account
November

One phone call

Prepared questions and contacted an organisation.

Something Alex once avoided

These are illustrative moments in one person's life. They do not represent a required sequence or automatic capture.

Looking back, not measuring up

Slowly, a pattern might emerge.

Not because MNS asked Alex to complete six skill categories. Because there are several real experiences to look back on.

Sam might gently notice

“In a few different situations, you seem to have helped people understand what to do next. Does that feel right to you?”

The interpretation stays open. Alex decides whether it fits.
One day · A real-world possibility

Alex finds a vacancy somewhere else.

MNS doesn't need to own the job search. Alex can bring an opportunity in and see how genuine experience might connect.

Illustrative vacancy · not a hiring judgement

Community Programme Assistant

Example local charity · Nottingham

Support welcoming visitors, explain activities, keep basic records.

The participant chooses an opportunity. Sam does not pronounce a career destination.

What might connect?

Choose “Bring this vacancy into MNS” to see an illustrative evidence-grounded Match. No suitability score is calculated.
Preparation · Not ghostwriting

The opportunity is real.
So are Alex's words.

Sam can help find relevant evidence, notice what is unclear, and support revision. Alex remains the author.

Editable example · Offline simulation
Fictional vacancy requirement

“Tell us about a time you helped other people.”

Alex can draw on the community event or another real experience. Sam should not manufacture a stronger story.

The aim is to make actual experience understandable, not to make the participant sound more impressive than the evidence.

Before the interview

A safe rehearsal.
For a real conversation.

No pass mark. No personality score. Just a chance to practise saying something aloud before meeting another human being.

Sample practice · Not voice recording

“Can you tell me about a time you helped someone?”

Sam · Interview preparation
What might Alex say?Try different answers
Back to the person

Sam can help Alex prepare.
A worker can help take it further.

MNS is a companion between meetings, not a replacement for relationships. Alex decides when to ask, and what to share.

Sample request · Nothing will be sent
Ask for a conversation

I'd like to discuss this opportunity with my worker.

Not sent
What the worker would receive

“Could we talk about this?”

Private Stories, other opportunities and the rest of Alex's life are not automatically shared.

Human judgement stays human. The worker may know Alex's circumstances, ask different questions, and help with things the app cannot decide.
    Another day, another reason

The app doesn't need the whole journey.

Someone else might start somewhere entirely different. No feature is a prerequisite for another.

Some people use MNS often. Some only occasionally. Some receive valuable human support without using it at all.

    The promise and the boundary

    Not a process to finish.
A presence you can return to.

MNS does not decide who Alex is, prescribe a career, replace a worker, or claim credit for a job. Its role is smaller, and more useful for being clear.

“Support the person, not the completion of a record.”

    ◌
    Real before impressive

A modest, truthful experience matters more than an inflated achievement.

    ↝
    Patient by design

Patterns may emerge over months. There is nothing to finish today.

    ✳
    Choice before compliance

Explore, preserve, pause, disagree or leave. The participant decides.

    ♡
    People remain central

Sam helps between encounters. Human support and real life remain beyond the screen.

    How do the pieces connect?

Alex's journey, in five moments. Choose any one to see what happened in life, how My Next Step helped, and what Alex carried back outside the app.

    01 / 05Alex's field notes

    Explore a little

    A small invitation is enough.

    In real life

Alex feels curious but doesn't have a particular goal.

    With MNS

Alex chooses a Challenge Card, swaps it, or just looks.

    Back in real life

One small possibility. Nothing to submit or prove.

One possible route, never five required steps. Begin anywhere, leave whenever something useful is done, and return when life gives you another reason.
    A different kind of outcome

    Alex hasn't got a job.
    Not in this story.

But Alex has a real example to talk about, a vacancy worth discussing, and a question for the next meeting.

“I think I have something to talk about now.”

That's progress MNS may help support, without claiming ownership of the person's future.
