Only change what the person meant to change
A tidy import preview is not the whole record.

The detail a preview leaves out
Imagine a profile with several carefully written work highlights. A CV import offers an updated location. You confirm that change, expecting the rest of the profile to stay as it was.
A preview may show only two highlights even though the saved record contains ten. Those numbers describe a test scenario, not someone’s reported loss. If the app saves the shortened preview as the whole record, details can disappear despite never being edited.
A change needs a specific destination
My Next Step’s import work tests preservation of existing structured detail when an unrelated field changes. The distinction is between an accepted update and a replacement for the entire record.
Technically, an update can identify the changed fields and apply them to the current stored record. An intentional deletion also needs an explicit meaning. An absent field, a blank value and “please remove this” are not automatically the same instruction.
Test what should stay untouched
Use a record with more detail than the preview shows. Change one field, save, and inspect the complete record afterward. Repeat with a deliberate deletion and with no changes at all.
A good result includes what changed and what remained. Often the untouched detail is where someone has already spent the most care.
